Instagram Reels Not Working? Fixes for Every Problem

Instagram reels not working? Restart, switch networks, update and clear cache first. Then match your symptom to its cause and fix with the table below.

The short answer

When Instagram reels are not working, the fix is usually on your phone, not at Instagram. Restart the phone, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, update the app, then force close and reopen it. Those four steps clear most loading, playing and posting problems in a couple of minutes.

If they don't, the symptom tells you where to look. A reel that won't load is a connection or data setting. A reel that won't upload is usually the file. 'Music not available' is a licensing rule tied to your account type or region, and no amount of reinstalling changes it. The table below maps each one.

Try these steps first, in this order

Instagram's Help Center gives the same starting order for almost every problem: restart the device, then test Wi-Fi and mobile data, then reinstall. Work down this list and test reels after each step so you know which one fixed it.

  • 1. Restart your phone. It clears stuck background processes that a closed app leaves behind.
  • 2. Switch networks. Turn Wi-Fi off and try mobile data, or the other way round. If reels load on one and not the other, the problem is the network, not Instagram.
  • 3. Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play. Old versions miss fixes and sometimes lose features.
  • 4. Force close and reopen. On iPhone, swipe the app away in the app switcher. On Android, go to Settings, Apps, Instagram, Force stop.
  • 5. Clear the cache. On Android, Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage, Clear cache (not Clear data, which logs you out). iPhone has no cache button, so offload or delete the app instead.
  • 6. Log out and log back in.
  • 7. Delete and reinstall the app, then sign in again.

Instagram reels not loading or not playing

Reels that spin, stall or play a black screen are almost always a data problem. Test another video app on the same network first. If that buffers too, restart the router or move closer to it; reels not loading on Wi-Fi but fine on mobile data points straight at the router.

Check the savers next. Instagram's own data setting lets you stop videos preloading on mobile data, according to its Help Center, which saves data but means each reel has to load when you reach it. Phone power savers (Low Power Mode on iPhone, Battery Saver on Android) can also throttle background loading. Turn them off and test again.

A VPN or proxy can slow reels down or route you through a region with different features. Switch it off while you test. If reels still won't play after all of that, clear the cache or reinstall.

No Reels tab, or you can't record a reel

Update the app first, because a missing Reels option is often just an old version. Then look in more than one place: Instagram moves buttons between versions, and the Reel option usually sits under the create (+) button as well as in the bottom bar.

Instagram's Help Center also says Reels is not available to everyone yet, and that some accounts can see reels without being able to record them. If that is your account, there is no setting to change; it needs the feature to reach you. Logging out and back in sometimes refreshes which features the app shows.

If the Reel camera opens but shows a black screen or records no sound, check permissions. Go to your phone's settings, find Instagram, and allow camera, microphone and photos access.

Why you can't post a reel: upload stuck or failing

When a reel won't post, look at the file before blaming the app. Instagram's Help Center lists a 9:16 aspect ratio for reels, a minimum frame rate of 30 frames per second and a minimum resolution of 720 pixels. A clip exported in an odd size, a high frame rate from a screen recorder, or an unusual codec can stall or fail.

The safe file is a 9:16 MP4 at 1080 x 1920, H.264 video and AAC audio, at the frame rate you shot. Our guide to the best export settings for reels gives the full numbers and why 4K rarely helps. Also check your phone has free storage; a nearly full phone can stall big uploads.

Length can matter too. Instagram's Help Center says you can record and edit reels up to 20 minutes, but upload limits can vary by account and roll out gradually, so a long file that fails may simply be over your limit. Trim it and try again.

Why can't I post reels on my story?

If you can't share someone else's reel to your story, the cause is usually their settings, not your app. Instagram's Help Center says sharing a post to your story needs the original account to be public and to allow resharing, and that a private account's reels can't be reused by anyone. Ask them to turn resharing on, or send the reel in a direct message instead.

If it is your own reel and the option is missing, check Settings, Sharing and reuse, where the 'Posts and reels to stories' toggle lives.

Instagram reels music not available

'Music not available' is a licensing rule, not a bug. Instagram's Help Center says a song can be unavailable because its Licensed Music Library is not offered for your account type or in your country or region, or because licensing agreements have changed. That is why business accounts often see fewer popular songs.

Your options: post with your own original audio, pick a track from Meta's Sound Collection, or add royalty-free music to the video before you upload it. If audio was muted after posting, Instagram lets you replace it from the reel's options. Switching a business account to personal changes which library you see, but think about what you lose before doing it. Our guide to adding music to Instagram reels covers each route.

Reel quality drops after upload

Every reel is recompressed, so some loss is normal. Big drops usually come from three things you control. Instagram's Help Center describes a setting to always upload reels at the highest quality, noting those uploads may take longer; find it under Media quality in settings and switch it on.

Then fix the source: export at 1080 x 1920 rather than 720p, don't upscale a small clip, and upload on Wi-Fi rather than a weak mobile signal. Give a new reel a few minutes; it can look soft until processing finishes.

Instagram reels not working on PC or in a browser

On a computer, test in a private window with extensions off. Ad blockers and video downloaders are the usual culprits. Update the browser, clear its cache for instagram.com, and try a second browser. If reels work in the phone app but not on the web, it is a browser problem, so the phone fixes above won't help.

When it is Instagram, not you

If reels stop working for you and your friends at the same time, on different phones and networks, it is likely an outage. Wait it out rather than reinstalling. If only your account is affected after every step above, report it: Instagram's Help Center says to update the app, then use Settings, Help, Report a problem, and include your device, what you were doing and a screenshot.

For cross-posting, its Help Center suggests checking that 'Your Instagram reels' sharing is on in Accounts Center and toggling it off and on to refresh the connection.

Posted, but no views: that is reach, not a bug

A reel that posts and plays but sits at a handful of views is working. Instagram's Help Center says it shows some reels less often in recommendations, including muted, blurry or low-resolution reels and reels that are not original. Account Status in your settings shows whether your content is limited.

If that is your problem, the fix is the reel itself: a stronger first second, original footage, a clean 1080p file. Our explainer on how the Instagram reels algorithm works covers what it actually rewards.

Make it in ReelXo

If uploads fail or quality drops, build the reel outside Instagram and hand it a clean file. ReelXo is a free reel editor for Android and iPhone that exports 9:16 MP4 at 720p, 1080p or 1440p on your phone, with no watermark and no account, and its music comes from Openverse's royalty-free library, so your audio doesn't depend on Instagram's licensed songs.

ReelXo does not post to Instagram for you. You export, then share the MP4 through your phone's share sheet and post it as normal. See what the ReelXo reel editor app can do.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Instagram reels not working today?

+

Usually a connection or app problem on your phone. Restart it, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, update Instagram and force close it. If friends on other phones have the same problem at the same time, it is probably an outage, and the only fix is to wait.

Why are Instagram reels not loading on Wi-Fi?

+

If reels load on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi, the router or network is the cause. Restart the router, move closer to it, turn off any VPN, and check another video app on the same Wi-Fi. Some public and work networks also block or throttle video.

Why can't I post reels on Instagram?

+

Check the file first: a 9:16 MP4 at 1080 x 1920 and at least 30 frames per second is the safest upload. Then free up storage, upload on Wi-Fi and update the app. If the Reel option itself is missing, Instagram says Reels is not available to every account yet.

Why is music not available on my Instagram reels?

+

Instagram's Help Center says licensed music may not be offered for your account type, often business accounts, or in your country or region, and licensing deals change. Use original audio, Meta's Sound Collection, or royalty-free music added before you upload.

Does clearing the Instagram cache delete my posts?

+

No. Clearing the cache on Android only removes temporary files the app stored on your phone. Your posts, reels, messages and drafts on Instagram's servers stay. Clear data is different: it signs you out and can remove unsaved drafts on the device, so use Clear cache first.
