How to Edit Instagram Reels After Posting (and What You Can't)
After posting a reel, you can edit its caption, tags and location, and replace muted audio. You can't change the video itself. Here is what to do instead.

The short answer
To edit an Instagram reel after posting, open it on your profile, tap the options menu, then Manage and Edit. From there you can change the caption, tag or untag people, and add or change the location. If the reel's music was muted, Instagram lets you replace the track once.
You can't change the video itself after posting: no trimming, swapping clips, fixing on-screen text or choosing a different song. For those, the only fix is to delete the reel and post a corrected version. The rest of this guide covers each edit step by step, what a repost costs you, and a checklist so you rarely need one.
What you can and can't change after posting
| Part of the reel | Editable after posting? | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Caption and hashtags | Yes | Options, Manage, Edit |
| Tagged people | Yes, add or remove | Edit, then Tag people |
| Location | Yes, add, change or remove | Edit, then the location field |
| Comments, like counts | Turn off commenting, hide likes | Options, Manage |
| Show on profile grid | Yes | Manage, Add to profile grid |
| Audio | Only if muted, and only once | Tap Audio unavailable, Replace audio |
| Cover photo | Help Center says no; some apps show it | Check the Edit screen |
| Clips, trims, order | No | Delete and repost |
| On-screen text and stickers | No | Delete and repost |
| A different song you chose | No | Delete and repost |
How to edit an Instagram reel caption after posting
Instagram's Help Center says you can add a caption to a reel you've already shared, edit it, or delete it. This is the fix for typos, a wrong hashtag, a missing credit or an updated line of details. Editing the caption doesn't touch the video, and the reel keeps its views, likes and comments.
- Go to your profile and open the reel
- Tap Options (the three dots), then Manage
- Tap Edit
- Change the caption, hashtags or mentions
- Tap Done to save
How to tag people or add a location after posting
Tags and location both live on the same Edit screen. Instagram's Help Center describes tagging after sharing as: go to the post, tap Options, tap Edit, then Tag people, choose the person and tap Done twice. If someone can't be tagged, they may have limited who can tag them in their privacy settings. On a private account you can only tag your followers.
For location, open the same Edit screen and add, change or remove the place. A location helps local accounts, venues and travel reels get found on location pages.
Can you change the cover after posting?
Instagram's Help Center currently states that you can't edit your cover photo after you've uploaded it. At the same time, many creators report a cover option inside the Edit screen of a published reel in newer app versions. Both can be true while a feature rolls out, so check your own app rather than trusting any guide, this one included.
If the option is there, tap it, slide to a better frame or add an image from your camera roll, check the grid crop and save. If it isn't, the cover stays as it is unless you repost.
How to change audio on an Instagram reel after posting
You can only replace a reel's audio after posting if Instagram has muted it. According to Instagram's Help Center, that happens when music licensing agreements change. The reel stays up, but the track goes silent and the reel shows Audio unavailable.
To replace it, open the reel, tap Audio unavailable, tap Replace audio twice, pick a licensed track from Instagram's library, choose the section you want and tap Done. Instagram says you can only replace a muted track once.
If the music wasn't muted and you just want a different song, there is no option for that. The music is part of the reel you shared. One way to avoid the problem is to put music you have the rights to, such as a clearly licensed royalty-free track, into the video file itself when you edit. That track isn't tied to Instagram's library agreements, though you still need to follow its license, including any credit it asks for.
Can you edit the video itself after posting?
No. Instagram's help pages describe trimming, reordering clips, replacing music and editing text and stickers only in the editor before you share. Once a reel is published, none of those options come back. That includes typos in on-screen text, a clip that runs a second too long, and captions that are out of sync.
Instagram doesn't publish separate edit rules for trial reels. It describes them as reels shared with non-followers first, so expect the same limits: the details around the video can change, the video can't.
Workarounds when the video needs fixing
If the mistake is in the video, you have three realistic options. Which one is right depends on how long the reel has been up and how much engagement it already has.
- Leave it and fix it in the caption: for a small typo or a wrong date, add a correction line at the top of the caption
- Archive it: Manage, then Archive hides the reel from your profile without deleting it, so you can bring it back later
- Delete and repost: re-edit the original file in your editor, export again and post it as a new reel
What you lose when you delete and repost
A repost is a new reel. It starts from zero. Instagram's remix help also notes that deleting a reel deletes the remixes other people made with it, and that restoring a deleted video within 30 days brings its remixes back too.
Some guides describe a delete option that moves the reel to drafts so you can re-edit it. We could not find that in Instagram's Help Center, so don't count on it. Keep your original edit in your own editor instead.
| Kept on a repost? | Answer |
|---|---|
| Views, likes, comments, shares | No, they stay with the deleted reel |
| The reel's link | No, the new reel gets a new link |
| Remixes others made | No, deleting the original deletes them |
| Your caption and hashtags | Only if you copy them first |
| Your original edit | Only if you saved the project or file |
Checklist before you tap Share
Most after-posting edits are avoidable. Run this list on the final preview, ideally on the phone at full brightness with sound on and then off.
- Watch the whole reel once with sound, once muted
- Read every text line slowly for typos and timing
- Check nothing important sits behind the buttons or caption
- Pick the cover yourself and check the grid crop
- Confirm the music is the right section and volume
- Save a draft or keep the project so you can re-export if needed
- Paste the caption into Notes first if it's long, so a crash doesn't lose it
Re-edit and re-export in ReelXo
If you made the reel in ReelXo, the fix is quick: the project autosaves on your phone, so open it, correct the text line or trim the clip on the timeline, and export a new MP4 at 720p, 1080p or 1440p with no watermark. Then share it to Instagram through your phone's share sheet. ReelXo does not post or edit reels on Instagram itself, so caption, tag and location edits still happen in the Instagram app.
Starting fresh? Pick a template from the library of 50+, drop in your shots, check every text line on the preview, and you won't need to repost at all.
Frequently asked questions
Can you edit a reel after posting?
+
Partly. Instagram lets you edit the caption, tagged people and location of a published reel, and replace the audio if it was muted. You can't change the video: clips, trims, on-screen text and the song you chose are fixed. To change those, delete the reel and post a new version.
How do I edit the text on my reel after posting?
+
If you mean the caption, open the reel, tap Options, Manage, then Edit, and change it. If you mean text shown on the video, Instagram has no way to edit it after posting. Fix it in your editor, export again and repost, or add a correction in the caption.
Can I change the music on my reel after posting?
+
Only if Instagram muted the original track. Then you'll see Audio unavailable on the reel, and you can tap Replace audio and pick a new licensed track, once. If the music still plays, there is no way to swap the song without reposting.
Does editing a reel caption affect reach?
+
Instagram hasn't published guidance saying a caption edit changes a reel's reach, and the reel keeps its views and engagement. Nothing in its help pages suggests an edit pushes the reel out again either, so don't edit a caption hoping for a second wave of views.
Can you edit a trial reel after posting?
+
Trial reels are reels shared to non-followers first, and Instagram doesn't list separate edit rules for them. Expect the same limits: caption and location edits, no changes to the video. Check before relying on it, because trial features change.
Will I lose views if I delete and repost a reel?
+
Yes. A reposted reel is a new post with a new link, so it starts at zero views, likes and comments. Remixes others made of the old reel are deleted with it. Only repost when the mistake is worth more than the engagement already earned.
