Best Reel Editing Apps for Android and iPhone (2026)

Our pick for most people is ReelXo: free, no watermark, 50+ beat-timed templates. Here is how it compares with CapCut, InShot, VN, Edits and Premiere.

The short answer

For most people making reels on their phone, our pick is ReelXo: it is free, exports have no watermark, there is no account to create, and 50+ templates turn photos and clips into a finished, beat-timed reel in about a minute, with a real multi-lane timeline when you want more control.

It is not the right tool for every job. If you need automatic captions generated from speech, Instagram's Edits, CapCut, VN and Adobe Premiere on mobile all do it and ReelXo does not. Below is how eight popular apps compare, as of October 2026, with honest notes on where each one, including ours, falls short.

How we compared the apps

A note up front: we make ReelXo, so read our pick with that in mind. We have kept the facts about every other app to what their own listings and help pages say. We looked at the official App Store listings, Google Play pages, help centers and product pages for each app in October 2026. Pricing in these apps changes often, so we describe the pricing model rather than quoting a number you may not see in your country.

Where we could not confirm a detail from an official source, we say so and suggest you check current terms inside the app. That matters most for watermarks, because the rules for free exports are the thing that changes most often.

  • Price model: free, free with optional subscription, or freemium with paid assets.
  • Watermark on free exports: does a free user get a clean file?
  • Templates: ready-made reels you fill with your own clips.
  • Captions: automatic speech-to-text, or typed captions only.
  • Platforms: Android, iPhone, and anything else.

ReelXo: fastest path from photos to a finished reel

ReelXo is our app, so read this with that in mind. It is a free reel maker for Android and iPhone that builds reels from templates. There are 52 bundled templates grouped by moment (birthday, travel, love, friendship, graduation and more). Each template asks for a fixed number of shots, with timing, transitions and captions already set so cuts land on the beat.

You can also pick your clips and tap auto-build in one of eight styles, such as Punchy, Cinematic, Clean, Retro, Glitch, Party, Noir and Dreamy. After that, a multi-lane timeline lets you split, trim, duplicate and undo, with 34 transitions, 37 effects and 20+ text animations. Music comes from a royalty-free library sourced from Openverse, and you can record a voiceover. Exports are MP4 at 720p, 1080p or 1440p, rendered on your phone, with no watermark and no account.

Where it falls short: there is no automatic speech-to-text. Karaoke captions light up word by word, but you type them yourself. There is also no AI generation, no green screen, no keyframe curve editor, no desktop version and no posting or scheduling. If you talk to camera a lot, an app with auto-captions will save you time.

CapCut: the most features, with a paywall to watch

CapCut has a huge template library, auto captions, background removal and exports up to 4K at 60fps according to its App Store listing. The App Store shows Standard and Pro subscription tiers. CapCut's own help center describes the Pro trial as including no watermark, premium templates and AI tools, which tells you some of those are paid.

Best for: creators who want trending templates and every effect in one place. Watch out for: Pro-only items inside a template, which can trigger a watermark or a paywall at export, and regional availability. We cover this in more detail in our guide to CapCut alternatives.

InShot: simple and familiar

InShot is a long-running, easy editor with AI speech-to-text captions and 4K 60fps saving, per its App Store listing. The listing shows a Pro subscription, a lifetime option, a remove-ads purchase and paid effect packs. Removing the InShot watermark has historically been linked to Pro or other in-app options, so check current terms before your first export.

Best for: quick trims, music and text on a single clip. Watch out for: ads and paid packs if you stay on the free version.

VN: a free timeline editor with no watermark

VN's App Store listing says it is free with no watermark, with VN Pro and credit packs as in-app purchases. It offers auto captions in multiple languages, platform templates for Reels and Stories, and a beat-synced template tool called BeatsClip. The listing says export goes up to 4K at 60fps; whether every export option is free can change, so check current terms.

Best for: people who want a proper multi-track timeline without paying. Watch out for: a learning curve if you have never used a timeline editor.

Edits: Instagram's own editor

Edits, an Instagram app, is free and its App Store listing says you can export in 4K with no watermark and share to any platform. It has auto captions, green screen, cutouts and templates, and you can capture clips up to 10 minutes long. The listing also mentions in-app purchases without detail.

Best for: creators who post mainly to Instagram and want captions and green screen for free. Watch out for: an app built around Instagram's workflow, which you may or may not want for TikTok and Shorts.

Adobe Premiere on mobile: pro control for free

Adobe Premiere arrived on iPhone in September 2025 and later on Android. Adobe's product page says the free app exports an unlimited number of videos in up to 4K with no watermarks, includes unlimited auto-captions, and has free templates. Generative AI features use credits, which are paid, and Adobe notes some features differ by platform.

Best for: anyone who wants a frame-accurate, multi-track editor and may later move to Premiere on desktop. Watch out for: device requirements on Android and a busier interface than template apps.

Splice: polished, subscription first

Splice is made by Bending Spoons and its App Store listing shows weekly, monthly and yearly subscriptions, with a free trial option. The listing does not spell out free-tier limits, templates, captions or watermark rules, so check current terms in the app.

Best for: people who already pay for it and like its trimming and speed tools. Watch out for: weekly billing if you forget to cancel a trial.

Canva: best if you already design in Canva

Canva's mobile app includes a video editor with templates and auto captions. Canva's help center says premium elements carry a watermark until purchased, and that free accounts cannot download designs that still contain them. Stick to free elements and you get a clean export.

Best for: brands and small businesses that keep their fonts and colours in Canva. Watch out for: it is a design tool first, so timeline editing is lighter than in a dedicated editor.

Which reel editing app should you pick?

  • Talking-head reels that need captions: Edits, CapCut, VN or Premiere on mobile.
  • Birthday, travel, couple or friends reels from photos: ReelXo, because a template does the timing for you.
  • Free multi-track editing with no watermark: VN, Edits or Premiere on mobile.
  • Brand content with fixed fonts and colours: Canva.
  • Every trend template and effect: CapCut, if you are happy to pay for Pro items.
  • One-clip quick edits: InShot.

Why the watermark question matters

Instagram's creators FAQ says watermarked reels and reposted content may reduce reach. A logo from another app in the corner is the classic example. So whichever editor you pick, make sure the final file is clean before you post, and export at the highest resolution the app allows.
